Luanda Jones, singer/songwriter
Brazilian singer/songwriter Luanda Jones presents a unique blend of bossa nova, funk, jazz and samba exploring the Brazilian classics as well as Jones’ own finely crafted original compositions. The launch of her highly acclaimed debut CD Aquarella in October 2009 gained regular rotation on the ever-supportive CBC radio and drawing legions of new followers to her many showcases both around Toronto and in other sections of the province. It also marked the end of a cycle in terms of the singer finding her feet in her new land, while helping to kick off a new phase of personal growth and exploration overseas in Europe.
During her long career, Luanda has carried forward the Brazilian musical tradition of singing about personal passion and the love for the natural beauty of Brazil and its people. A vocalist in the tradition of the great Brazilian singers Gal Costa, Elis Regina, and Joyce, Luanda’s songs are replete with “Saudade” – the famous Portuguese word that is woven throughout Brazil’s musical fabric – especially that of Bossa Nova.
