One of the sweetest renditions of this classic song that I’ve ever ever heard, and very far from Kansas!
This is the Chamber Orchestra of Cienfuegos, Cuba.
I put together this video out of deep respect for this group of musicians and love for their performance. They have touched many people’s hearts with the passion and sweetness of their music.
This rendition is just “too good not to share”. I found very little from this ensemble online except a very few live concert clips – including “Oklahoma” and “Danzón Legrand” – but not this magic song.
So… I combined their performance with my own (Hi-Res, still) images of Cienfuegos.
Two images of rainbows are from Maui – all else is Cienfuegos, in the city’s center and outskirts.
The ensemble do sell CD’s (which dearly help them with scarce and costly supplies, such as strings), so go see them!
The Chamber Orchestra of Cienfuegos, which I was lucky enough to see in an intimate venue in Cuba’s “Pearl of the South”, is without a doubt one of the tastiest chamber music orchestras I’ve seen anywhere. In addition to European and Cuban classical (orchestral) music, they do some amazing renditions of cha-cha, which was in fact “born” nearby, and other uniquely Cuban sounds, three of my favorites being Cachita, Danzón, and Bodeguero.
And much to the surprise of many who see them live, their repertoire also includes some classic American show tunes such as Shenandoah and Somewhere Over the Rainbow.
I saw tears of joy in the audience when this very serious chamber orchestra – with seriously authentic Cuban cha-cha chops – performed Shenandoah. For me, it was this song which grabbed me by the soul.
